Competency Modules – LPN
We offer a range of competency modules addressing content currently in the LPN Scope of Practice.
The following modules are coordinated through the Centre for Nursing Studies:
- Intramuscular Injection Module – provides the LPN with the necessary knowledge to safely prepare and administer medications via the intramuscular route.
- Intradermal Injection Module – provides the LPN with the necessary knowledge to safely administer medications via the intradermal route.
- Intravenous Therapy Administration Module – provides the LPN with the necessary knowledge to safely administer and monitor care for a client receiving intravenous therapy.
- Blood and Blood Product Administration Module – provides the LPN with the necessary knowledge to safely administer and monitor care for a client receiving blood and blood products. Pre-requisite: Intravenous Therapy Administration Module.
- Immunization Module – provides the LPN with the necessary knowledge to safely prepare and administer immunizations through various routes. Pre-requisite: Imtramuscular and Intradermal Modules.
- IV Medication Administration Module – provides the LPN with the necessary knowledge to safely administer IV medications. Pre-requisite: Intravenous Therapy Administration Module.
- IV Initiation Module – provides the nurse with the necessary theoretical and clinical skills required for initiation and care of IV therapy.
- Hypodermocylsis Module – The purpose of this self-learning module is to prepare LPNs to initiate hypodermoclysis therapy for clients. Pre-requisite: Intravenous Therapy Administation Module.
- Central Venous Access Device (CVAD) Module – The purpose of this self-learning module is to prepare LPNs to safely care for clients with CVADs (tunneled versus non-tunneled catheters, short-term vascular access devices i.e. CVP lines, PICC lines and implanted ports). Pre-requisite required: Intravenous Therapy Administation Module.

If you are interested completed a module, please fill the Application form for competency modules (PDF). Applications must be completed and fees submitted to the Registrar for Continuing Nursing Studies.
External Health-Care Agencies
The following modules are available for purchase by health-care agencies for LPNs. Agencies are responsible for supervising and testing student competency.
- Male & Female Catheterization – provides LPN with the necessary theoretical and clinical skills required for urinary catheterization.
- Gastrointestinal Tube Feedings and Nasogastric Suctioning – provides the LPN with the necessary theoretical and clinical skills required for gastrointestinal tube feedings.
- Oxygen Therapy & Oral Suctioning – provides the LPN with the necessary theoretical and clinical skills required for oxygen therapy and oral suctioning.
