News and Announcements

Welcome to the Centre for Nursing Studies (CNS)!

Whether you are a new student or returning to continue in one of our nursing programs, you are on the path to being an integral part of the largest group of regulated health professionals in Canada. The CNS takes tremendous pride in its 28-year history of delivering quality nursing education programs, supporting student success, advancing research, and contributing to high quality health care in this province and beyond. We are proud of our committed and outstanding team of faculty, staff, and administrative members as well as amazing students. As director of the CNS, I am honored to be a part of this dedicated team whose vision is focused on excellence and leadership in nursing education.

In partnership with Memorial University Faculty of Nursing and Western Regional School of Nursing, the CNS offers two options of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program (i.e., 4-Year Option, LPN Bridging Option). In addition to our own Practical Nursing Program, the CNS partners with nine campuses of the College of the North Atlantic in delivering the CNS Practical Nursing Program. The CNS also offers multiple continuing education opportunities for LPNs and RNs and leads several international nursing initiatives.

Operated by Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services, the CNS partners with health care, educational, and regulatory organizations in graduating an adequate supply of nursing team members. The unprecedented demand for nurses continues resulting in numerous, diverse, and exciting career opportunities that exist here at home.

We encourage you to grow your nursing career in Newfoundland and Labrador!

The CNS is an extraordinary place where faculty, staff, and administrative members work as a team in offering high quality programs. The CNS faculty members are recognized as leaders in the nursing profession and are committed to excellence in all aspects of nursing education, practice, and research. They support students and facilitate their learning. Our academic and support staff members go above and beyond to support students and faculty alike. Our program options have consistently received the maximum accreditation awarded by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing as well as the highest level of approval by the College of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador and the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador. CNS graduates are recognized for their competence, leadership skills, and ability to be practice-ready in diverse health care settings.

This is always an exciting time of year as the passion for nursing among our new and returning students is remarkable and gives us renewed inspiration for the leadership role that the CNS plays in nursing education and the nursing profession in this province and beyond. I sincerely thank all students for choosing nursing and stepping forward to be a part of a profession that is worthy of the utmost praise and respect.

On behalf of the administrative team, I would also like to extend a sincere welcome to all faculty and staff members. The CNS faculty and staff continue to work tirelessly to ensure program excellence and successful outcomes for nursing students. They have a critical role to play in the educational journey of nursing students. I look forward to working with them throughout 2024-2025 to ensure that it is a successful and rewarding year for all students, faculty, and staff.

Sincerely,
Dr. Kathy Watkins, PhD, RN
