Student Health Plan

All students are eligible to participate in the Memorial University Students’ Union (MUNSU) Student Health Plan. This plan covers drugs and other services. In addition, students are eligible to participate in the MUNSU Student Dental Plan. Students who do not already have medical insurance are required to participate in both of these plans. Those students who have outside medical coverage must complete a form to opt out of the MUNSU health plans. Forms are available through Memorial University Students Union (MUNSU). For particulars, please call the MUNSU office at 709-864-7633.

Counselling Services (MUN)

The primary function of the Counselling Centre is to help students develop their personal capabilities. The Centre offers: personal counselling, career planning, group counselling, and academic support programs. Students may access counseling services through the Memorial University Counselling Centre.

Guidance and Counselling Services (CNS)

Guidance and counselling services in the areas of academic, personal, and career planning are provided by a qualified guidance counsellor. The confidentiality policy for client and counsellor is in accordance with provincial and federal legislation.

The CNS guidance counsellor’s office is located on Ground floor, Southcott Hall. The guidance counsellor can be contacted by telephone or email: Dawn Lanphear at 709-777-8187 or dawn.lanphear@mun.ca.

Student utilization of the guidance services is generally on a voluntary basis. However, students may also be referred to the guidance counsellor by a faculty member. In these instances, students work collaboratively with the guidance counsellor and faculty member, if necessary, to develop and implement strategies to help resolve the identified problem area.

Student Organizations

Students at the Centre for Nursing Studies will have the opportunity for participation in a number of student organizations.

Memorial University of Newfoundland Students’ Union (MUNSU)

Memorial University Students Union (MUNSU), which represents more than 13,000 undergraduate students, is elected each Spring by the student body at Memorial. The council exists for the purpose of making students’ concerns heard and providing input into all administrative and academic decisions with these concerns in mind.

All students become members of MUNSU by virtue of the fees paid upon registration.

MUNSU is also affiliated with the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS).

The student services provided by MUNSU are outlined in the Student Handbook and Day Planner distributed during registration.

Nursing Society

As Centre for Nursing Studies students, you will have the opportunity to become members of the CNS Nursing Society that will be recognized by and have representation on the Council of the Students Union.

The purposes of the nursing society are to:

  • Promote interest in extracurricular nursing activities;
  • Promote unity among the nursing student body and to act as a liaison between nursing students, faculty and other student organizations;
  • Provide a forum through which students can express their opinions on issues in nursing; and
  • Encourage participation in professional and liberal education.

Canadian Nursing Students Association (CNSA)

The purpose of the organization is to promote professionalism among nursing students. Canadian Nursing Students’ Association (CNSA) aims to bring issues of relevance in the field to the attention of student nurses and to make students more aware of the legal, moral, professional, and educational problems that are a large part of nursing and that must be faced now rather than when students become licensed or registered. The CNSA:

  • Provides a communication link among baccalaureate nursing students across Canada.
  • Acts as the official voice of baccalaureate nursing students.
  • Provides a medium through which members can express their opinions on nursing issues.
  • Encourages participation in professional and liberal education.
  • Maintains a direct link with other organizations concerned with nursing:
    • Canadian Nursing Association
    • Canadian Association of University Schools of Nursing
    • Provincial Nursing Associations
    • National Student Nurses Association in the U.S.
    • International Council of Nursing
  • Enhances awareness of the need for nursing research.

The Centre for Nursing Studies, as a member of the CNSA, elects an official delegate to the organization.

Student Representation on Faculty Council/Committees

The Nursing Society annually elects students to serve on standing committees at the Centre for Nursing Studies. The faculty members value student participation on these committees, which are useful forums for promoting channels of communication among students and faculty.

Student representatives sit on the following committees:

  • Academic Council
  • Undergraduate Studies Committee
  • Learning Resource Committee

Class Executive

Students in each year of the program elect their own class executive which assumes responsibility for conducting the affairs of the class and for organizing class activities, fundraising events, etc.
