A message from Dr. Kathy Watkins, Director, Centre for Nursing Studies

Welcome to the Centre for Nursing Studies (CNS)! Whether you are a new student or returning to continue in one of our nursing programs, you are on the path to being an integral part of the largest group of regulated health professionals in Canada.

The CNS takes tremendous pride in its 27-year history of offering exceptional nursing programs. In partnership with Memorial University Faculty of Nursing and Western Regional School of Nursing, the CNS offers two options of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program (i.e., four-year option and the LPN bridging option). In addition to our own Practical Nursing Program, the CNS partners with several campuses of the College of the North Atlantic in delivering the CNS Practical Nursing program across the province.

The CNS prepares nursing graduates to be practice-ready in the increasingly complex and constantly evolving Canadian health-care environment. The unprecedented demand for nurses continues and with that demand comes numerous, diverse, and exciting career opportunities.

The CNS is an extraordinary place where you will be part of programming and experiences that will be life changing. Faculty, staff, and administration at the CNS work as a team in offering high quality nursing education programs. The CNS faculty members are recognized as leaders in the nursing profession and are committed to excellence in all aspects of nursing education, practice, and research. They support students and facilitate their learning. Our academic and support staff members are knowledgeable and helpful. They go above and beyond to support students and faculty alike. Our educational unit and program options have consistently received the maximum accreditation awarded by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing as well as the highest level of approval by the College of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador and the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador. CNS graduates are recognized for their competence, leadership skills, and ability to successfully practice in multiple health care settings.

This is always an exciting time of year as the passion for nursing among our new and returning students is remarkable and gives us renewed inspiration for the leadership role that the CNS plays in nursing education and the nursing profession in this province and beyond. I am always in awe and proud of CNS nursing students who, despite some challenges, remain highly committed to their studies and make a profound impact on the lives of others while in the nursing student role. I sincerely thank all students for choosing nursing and stepping forward to be a part of a profession that is worthy of the utmost praise and respect.

On behalf of the administrative team at the CNS, I would also like to extend a sincere welcome to all faculty and staff members. The CNS faculty and staff continue to work tirelessly to ensure program excellence and successful outcomes for nursing students. They have a critical role to play in the educational journey of nursing students and our programs. I look forward to working with them throughout 2023-2024 to ensure that it is a successful and rewarding year for all students, faculty, and staff.

Sincerely,
Dr. Kathy Watkins, PhD, RN
Director, Centre for Nursing Studies
