Caregiver

The practical nurse graduate is prepared to:

  • Base practice on knowledge acquired from nursing, science and the humanities.
  • Collaborate with the client and other members of the health care team in providing client care.

Advocacy

The practical nurse graduate is prepared to:

  • Act as an advocate for the client by collaborating with other members of the health-care team.
  • Advocate for healthy public policy.
  • Facilitate partnerships with clients and team members.

Professional

The practical nurse graduate is prepared to:

  • Assume a leadership role that facilitates and enhances delivery of client care.
  • Assume responsibility for maintaining competency and fitness to practice.
  • Adhere to ethical/legal obligations for practice.

The Practical Nursing Program is designed to prepare graduates who are able to provide client care that is based on the knowledge acquired from the biological, behavioural, social and nursing sciences, and, in doing so, care for clients across the life cycle. Graduates will be prepared to implement health promotion, health maintenance, health restoration and illness prevention activities, in partnership and collaboration with the client and other members of the health care team.

Our Practical Nursing Program will prepare graduates to perform psychomotor and behavioural competencies, within the approved Scope of Practice for Licensed Practical Nurses for the beginning practitioner. Graduates will receive opportunities to practice competencies in acute care, continuing care and community care settings, with a teaching-learning approach that favours self-direction and life-long learning.

The graduate of the PN Program will possess the attributes of professional caring and competence they were prepared to assume: direct caregiver; teacher/mentor; facilitator/counselor; client advocate; coordinator; participant in policy and community development.
