Curriculum
Semester One
N101 Introduction to Nursing
This course explores the nature of human needs throughout the lifespan. It introduces the student to the role of the practical nurse in promotive, preventive, curative, rehabilitative and supportive care across the health continuum. This course contains a lab component.
N103 Therapeutic Relationships
This course introduces the student to the principles of therapeutic communication. It is designed to enable the student to establish and maintain professional therapeutic relationships with individuals and groups, and introduces teaching-learning principles. This course contains a lab component which focuses on enhancing self-awareness and the application of therapeutic communication principles.
N105 Gerontological Nursing
This course will examine the concepts of health and wellness pertaining to the older adult. Students will explore age-related changes, common chronic conditions and end of life issues that are experienced by older adults at the end of the lifespan. Ageism, changing demographics and societal forces influencing the health and well-being of older adults will be analyzed and critiqued.
N108 Pharmacology I
This course will provide the student with knowledge and skills to prepare and administer medications to clients under the supervision of a clinical instructor. This course contains a lab component.
N109 Anatomy and Physiology I
This course is designed to provide information about the basic concepts of the structure and function of the human body. The structural levels of organization, basic chemistry, the integumentary, musculoskeletal, nervous and endocrine systems, as well as the senses are covered in this course. Emphasis is given to the relationship between structure and function and homeostasis.
N110 Medical-Surgical Nursing I
This course is designed to introduce students to medical – surgical nursing concepts. Concepts related to fluid and electrolyte balance, intravenous therapy and pain management will be covered. Emphasis will also be on the care of clients experiencing acute and chronic health conditions associated with the integumentary, musculoskeletal, respiratory, urinary/renal and gastrointestinal systems. This course contains a laboratory component.
CN101 Introduction to Nursing Practice (LTC)
This practice course provides the student with opportunities to integrate knowledge and apply competencies necessary to care for clients requiring basic nursing care.
Semester Two
N201 Mental Health Nursing
This theory course is designed to provide information pertaining to concepts related to psychiatric / mental health disorders which emerge across the life span. The course content examines the psychopathology of mental health disorders and the nursing care and treatments for clients with alterations in mental health. Familial, societal, legal, and ethical considerations pertaining to mental health disorders will also be explored.
N208 Pharmacology II
This course will provide the student with knowledge and skills to prepare and administer medications to clients under the supervision of a clinical instructor. This course contains a lab component.
N209 Anatomy & Physiology II
This is an introductory level course designed to provide information about the basic concepts of the structure and function of the human body. The circulatory, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems are covered, as well as the processes of human development and heredity. Emphasis is given to the relationship between structure, function, and homeostasis.
N210 Health Assessment
This course will provide the student with the knowledge and skills required to perform health assessment for clients with predictable outcomes. Course content focuses on history taking and physical examination using a systems approach. The emphasis is on the normal; enabling the student to distinguish normal from abnormal findings. Although covering the lifespan, emphasis is placed on health assessment of the adult client. This course contains a lab component which focuses on history taking and applying the psychomotor competencies of physical assessment.
CN201 Mental Health Nursing Practice
This practice provides students with the opportunity to integrate knowledge and practice competencies acquired in N201 and other relevant courses in their provision of care for individuals experiencing alterations in mental health. There is an emphasis on enhancing therapeutic relationships, communication skills, and students working collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team, families, and the community.
CN207 Medical-Surgical Nursing Practice I
This practice course provides the student with opportunities to integrate knowledge and apply competencies necessary to care for clients in adult medical-surgical settings.
CN210 Pharmacology and Leadership Nursing Practice in the Gerontological Setting
This practice course provides the practical nursing student with opportunities to evaluate health resources, integrate knowledge and apply competencies necessary to care for residents in long term care. This clinical course offers the student opportunities to further apply the principles of medication administration and to participate in a leadership experience. The student will attain an understanding of the components of leadership including delegation, collaboration and the coordination of care for residents in long term care.
Semester Three
N301 Community Health Nursing
This course examines the principles of primary health care, population health and the application to community health nursing. A broad range of community health issues will be discussed, with a key focus on strategies to improve the health of populations. This course will also provide the student with an opportunity to explore and identify the role of the practical nurse in promoting, restoring, protecting and supporting the health status of clients in the community setting.
N302 Maternal-Child Nursing
Emphasis is on care of the childbearing woman, stages of growth and development and common childbearing and child development health problems. Care of the child & adolescent experiencing health problems in areas of integumentary, musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, hematological and neurological disorders will be discussed. This course contains a laboratory component.
N306 Medical-Surgical Nursing II
This course is designed to provide further information on medical – surgical nursing concepts. Concepts related to cancer and autoimmune disorders will be covered. Emphasis will also be on the care of clients experiencing acute and chronic health conditions associated with the hematological, cardiovascular, neurological, sensory, endocrine and reproductive systems. The care of clients receiving blood and blood products will also be discussed. This course contains a laboratory component.
N309 Leadership in Nursing
This course will focus on the paradigm shift from an educational experience into the workforce. Course content will include the ethical dimensions of practical nurse practice and the principles and processes of change and conflict for effective participation. The course will also facilitate discussion of factors that promote effective leadership and management in practical nurse practice. The student will also have an opportunity to develop the necessary skills to write professional papers and to discuss career planning and the employment process.
N310 Leadership Seminars
Students will actively participate in the simulated learning scenario:
- Students will demonstrate the skills of prioritization, critical thinking, problem solving, communication and team work during simulation scenarios
- Students will participate in a debriefing session to critically analyze the simulation experience, reflect on strengths and challenges, provide constructive feedback to peers following participation in the simulation scenario
CN302 Maternal-Child Health Nursing Practice
The practice course provides the student with the opportunities to integrate knowledge and apply competencies necessary to care for clients in the Obstetric and Pediatric settings.
CN306 Medical-Surgical Nursing Practice II
This practice course provides the student with opportunities to integrate knowledge and apply competencies necessary to care for clients in adult medical-surgical settings.
Students are expected to review and apply previously learned theory related to health assessment, anatomy and physiology, medical surgical nursing and pharmacology to one – two assigned clients.
Semester Four
CN401 Nursing Practice for Professional Development
This practice course provides the student with the opportunities to integrate knowledge and apply competencies necessary to achieve clinical proficiency.
CN402 Preceptorship
This practice course provides the student with opportunities and settings to integrate knowledge and apply competencies necessary to facilitate transition from student to beginning practitioner.
CN403 Community Health Nursing Practice
This practice course provides the student with opportunities to integrate knowledge and apply competencies necessary to care for clients in the community setting.
